No matter how many times you visit the castle of Methoni, there is always a reason to return. Spring walk with friends in the castle was the perfect idea.

The castle of Methoni is one of the most important and beautiful in Greece. It was built by the Venetians when they became masters of the city in 1209. It is a typical example of a castle city that extends over a large area of 93 acres. In addition, an excellent natural harbor, which during the medieval times was a stop for the pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land and for merchant ships travelling from West to East. The period of prosperity of the castle is placed in the period of the First Venetian rule (13th-15th century).

The weather was beautiful and all the flowers were greeting us. Strolling around the castle we were impressed by the old powder keg, a square building with a pyramidal cover dating back to the first Venetian period. The view over the fields from there was just amazing.

Following the stone paths, we arrived at the most impressive part of the castle which is the octagonal tower of Bourtzi. A place where time stops and you are immediately transfered into another period of time.

But what impressed me the most this time was the beauty of the spring flowers that sprouted among the stones, in perfect harmony with the landscape.

If you are in the area don’t miss out on a visit to the castle of Methoni.
